week 1
SP week 1 blog
So far in this past week, we have learned many new skills in relation to farming, the behind-the-scenes work that goes into it, and the actual physical labor necessary to do it. in this past week Connor, Hank, George, and I have been working on a farm that supplies 2 restaurants with vegetables and other produce. This was the first time I have ever farmed or been a part of the process. I learned a lot from the Manager of the farm a 77-year-old retired engineer named Jim, who now runs the farm and does it because he loves it. The physical labor needed for us to complete the tasks assigned was a little challenging for us four complete and it astonished us how Jim was able to do it every day and sometimes out-work us. I really liked the work we did for the past week, we were able to meet many new people that I would never have met in a region of the country that I have never been in. Also, this work is something that I have never taken part in or even really thought about on a day-to-day basis but this week made me relive how apparent and necessary farming is to my community and the people around us. this weekend we were able to take a trip to both of the restaurants that this farm supplies. I thought it was really cool to be able to plant a couple thousand onions and a couple hundred potatoes and then on the weekend be able to eat the very vegetables that were planted on that farm from last season and knowing that this fall when our vestibules are ready to bed eaten they will be driven down and cooked into food feeding a community. overall I expected everything that we did and there weren’t too many surprises although I went into this experience with an open mind not knowing much about the process from farm to table and was excited to learn the ins and outs of working on a farm. I Believe I will benefit from this experience a lot and have a lot more gratitude words other occupations that I don’t know that much about and I also will be more aware of the food I eat and where it comes from along with the waste and thrown out food that I go through now knowing the hard work and hours taken to have onion on your pizza. this helps us achieve our goal because currently there are a total of 5 people working at the farm and the addition of four 18 yearly boys definitely helped the productivity of the farm and the time taken to do all the necessary tasks as last week was the beginning of the planting season so we came to help in one of the most hectic times of the year for this particular farm.
Great observations and reflections Griffin! You are doing important work!
